Cornstarch substitute

1 tablespoon cornstarch (to thicken) = 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

To thicken a sauce, any starch works. Flour needs more, and cooks out to a cloudier sauce.

Substitutes for 1 tablespoon cornstarch (to thicken)

  1. Option 1

    2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

Use twice as much. Simmer for a couple of minutes to cook out the raw taste. Sauce will be cloudier.

  2. Option 2

    1 tablespoon arrowroot

A 1:1 swap. Makes a clear, glossy sauce. Do not boil it for long, or it thins out.

  3. Option 3

    1 tablespoon potato starch

A 1:1 swap. Add near the end and do not boil.
